Pores are an opening to a hair follicle which means that at the root of every pore a hair follicle is to be found. The follicles of the face are very small and almost unnoticeable and on the base of each and one of them are oil glands. These oil glands tend to overgrow, usually during puberty, which makes the pores seem bigger and more apparent.
The tiny dots that we can see when closely looking in the mirror are the openings of our hair follicles. They contain sebaceous glands that are responsible for the production of skin oils. These sebaceous glands are bigger in some areas of the face like the forehead and the nose and are the ones “guilty” of making your pores more visible.

However, your genes are also responsible for the size of your pores. Usually, people with darker or olive skin have bigger pores than fair-skinned people. Your pores are also conditioned by your skin type. People with oily skin are prone to having more visible pores while those with dry skin don’t have this issue.
There are various other factors that determine the size of the pores. For example, trapped sebum and dead skin cells may form pimples that starch out the pore. UV rays affect the pores by weakening the collagen that keeps them tight and by that makes them larger. Aging also contributes to the widening of pores because as our body is getting older the amount of collagen that it produces gradually decreases. A mistake made by many is squeezing the pimples which makes things only worse because it can cause trauma to the skin or widen the pores.
